Transforming health in Wiltshire

Over recent months the Government's Department of Health has issued a number of plans and proposals for significant changes to the way in which health services will be delivered in the near future.

The proposals form the biggest change in health since the NHS was formed in 1948.

The Government's White Paper, July 2010, 'Equity and excellence: Liberating the NHS' sets out their ambitious plans to modernise the NHS.

The Government's public health White Paper, November 2010, ‘Healthy Lives, Healthy People’ sets out their plans and proposals to transfer responsibility for local public health improvement to local authorities.

A new national Public Health Service is to be established which will set out an overall framework for action and set standards around key areas like evidence and effectiveness, but there will be greater flexibility in how local communities take action to achieve improvements.

Wiltshire Council and NHS Wiltshire have sent a joint response to the Department of Health's white paper Healthy lives, healthy people consultation. Our response outlines our views on the implications of the proposed health reforms for people in Wiltshire.

In January 2011 the government's Health and Social Care Bill was introduced to parliament for the proposed changes to health to become legal.

The Department of Health is currently holding a listening exercise on their proposed modernisation of the NHS to give people a chance to share their views on how to improve the proposed legislation. The listening exercise has four discussion themes: Choice and competition, Accountability and patient involvement, Education and training and Advice and leadership.
