The NHS and you

Keeping the NHS relevant to you through the NHS Constitution

Primary care trusts are a core part of the NHS, accounting for 80% of its budget and NHS Wiltshire is one of the 151 primary care trusts in England.

To ensure that the NHS as a whole continues to be relevant to the needs of patients, the public and staff in the 21st Century, the NHS Constitution, published in January 2010, brings together the principles, values, rights and responsibilities that underpin the NHS.

The Constitution aims to guide the NHS in everything it does, making sure that patients are involved in their treatment and care, and safeguarding the future of the NHS.

For current guidance on the rights, pledges, duties and responsibilities established by the Constitution, you can read The Handbook.

To guarantee that the principles and values which underpin the NHS are subject to regular review and recommitment, the NHS Constitution will be renewed every 10 years, with the involvement of the public, patients and staff, and, as a minimum, The Handbook will be updated every three years.

These requirements for renewal are legally binding – that way we can make sure we keep the NHS, and how we operate in Wiltshire, relevant to you.
