Consultations

NHS Wiltshire and The Department of Health are keen to consult stakeholders and the wider public in the shaping and development of policy.

Breastfeeding consultations

Breastfeeding has a key role to play in keeping adults and children well, optimising their health and reducing inequalities and remains a national priority for government.

Healthy Lives, Healthy People White Paper: Our Strategy for Public Health in England (Department of Health, 2010) highlights the importance of sustaining breastfeeding and refers to the contribution it has to play in reducing infant mortality.

NHS Wiltshire has engaged with a range of agencies to develop a draft Breastfeeding Strategy for Wiltshire, published on 3rd June 2011. The strategy focuses on the following key areas of work:

  • Effective multi-agency working and leadership
  • Robust data collection and analysis
  • Achievement and maintenance of UNICEF Baby Friendly Initiative accreditation in maternity and community services
  • Provision of ongoing information and support to women in the antenatal and postnatal stages that is easily accessible, timely and appropriate to their needs.
  • Increasing targeted breastfeeding support
  • Promoting breastfeeding as the cultural norm

The Wiltshire Breastfeeding Steering Group is keen to gain as wide a view of the content as possible. We therefore hope that you will take this opportunity to work with on us shaping the way Wiltshire improves and sustains breastfeeding rates over the coming three years by sending us your comments on the draft strategy.
