Minor injury units

Minor Injury Units (MIUs) are run by teams of highly qualified nurse practitioners with a lot of experience and expertise in the treatment of minor injuries for less serious injuries such as cuts and grazes, sprains and strains, burns and scalds, and simple fractures. While these problems may not feel ‘minor’ to the patient, they are not life-threatening. For people with minor injuries visiting a main Accident & Emergency Department can often mean a long wait as staff must give priority to serious & life threatening conditions.

MIUs save time for patients and make more effective use of NHS resources.

You do not need an appointment to visit a Minor Injuries Unit.

If you're not sure whether your injury can be treated in a MIU, telephone NHS Direct on 0845 4647 and they will be able to advise you. This service operates 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

In an emergency (a life-threatening situation) dial 999
