NHS Wiltshire and Wiltshire Council jointly commission carer support services.
Wiltshire Council and NHS Wiltshire recognise and value the contribution that carers who look after their family and friends on an unpaid basis make to our community.
Becoming a carer can happen to any of us at anytime. The impacts of caring can be far reaching and it can be a continual balancing act to manage the caring role alongside the commitments of daily life. The number of carers in Wiltshire will continue to rise in future years and so we must ensure that we are ready to support them in their caring roles for as long as they wish to continue.
To this end, The Wiltshire Carers Strategy 2011-2014 has been designed with carers at its centre and is about making sure that action takes place. It outlines the commitments of various organisations in Wiltshire to develop and deliver good quality services to carers. These organisations are:
· Wiltshire Council
· NHS Wiltshire
· Carers Support Wiltshire
This strategy has been developed in line with Recognised, valued and supported: Next steps for the Carers Strategy 2010. It also builds upon the previous Wiltshire Carers Policy & Strategy, the Strategic Health Authority Self Assessment undertaken in 2011 and most importantly it reflects the main issues for carers in Wiltshire. To this end, it is a continually evolving document. The strategy can be found here: Wiltshire Carers Strategy
In addition, a carers commissioning plan outlines the priorities and associated commissioning intentions of Wiltshire Council and NHS Wiltshire in addressing the needs of carers. In so doing, it sits below the Wiltshire Carers Strategy which sets out the vision for support for carers in Wiltshire. It would therefore be appropriate to read this document alongside the Wiltshire Carers Strategy.
This document is aligned both to national strategic intentions and the needs of carers in Wiltshire and therefore is continually evolving. The commissioning plan can be found here: Commissioning Plan for Carers
From 1st April 2011 carer support agencies based in Pewsey, Chippenham, Trowbridge and Salisbury came together to form Carer Support Wiltshire, which provides support, advice and information services to carers across the county, as well as training for carers, break opportunities and a range of support groups.
In Wiltshire there are a range of services and support available to people who care for family and friends. With the creation of a single agency carers will now have access to high quality support, information and advice, which will be delivered equitably across Wiltshire.
