Booking an appointment

Information for patients

Talk to a Speech and Language Therapist using our telephone Advice Line: 01225 761126. Every Monday to Thursday 4pm to 5 pm.
Seek advice from someone in the child’s education setting, health visitor or GP, who can refer them to the service.

Referrals are accepted for children who are registered with a Wiltshire GP and are attending a Wiltshire pre-school or a Wiltshire Local Authority School. Please telephone the department if you have any queries about referring a child.

We aim to see children within 4 weeks of receiving a complete referral.

Information for pre-schools

Before you refer a child to the service… Introduce activities/games to help develop speech language, communication skills. Develop an action plan and record progress.

If expected progress has not been made you may need to refer the child for speech and language therapy advice. A referral for speech/language assessment is needed when specific communication difficulties are identified.

You can access advice/information/training about speech and language difficulties from this website.

Talk to your Early Years Inclusion Advisor and see recommendations in the “The Wiltshire Indicators and Provision Document”. You also may want to also refer to the Code of Practise and relevant publications from the Department of Education and Skills. Wiltshire Council has also provided advice for referring Pre-School’s.

You can refer a child to the Speech and Language service using the ‘Observation Matrix’ and ‘Background Information from Parents’ form.

Information for schools

You can access advice/information/training about speech and language difficulties from this website.

You can refer a child to the Speech and Language service using a CAF form. The CAF form can be found on the Wiltshire Pathways website. Please also follow the process as identified in “The Wiltshire Indicators and Provision Document”.

If you would like the child to be seen by one of the specialist teams (such as; Specific Language Impairment Team, Social Communication Team) please specify and highlight on the top of the form. You might also want to talk this referral through with one of the professionals from Specialist team.

Information for health visitors

Before you refer a child to the service please consider…

Talking to other involved professionals to get a broader picture of the child.
Providing additional information if appropriate through a Schedule Of Growing skills (SOG).
Encouraging parents and pre-school to introduce activities/games that will help develop speech language, communication skills. It might be appropriate to develop a short action plan and record progress. You can access advice/information/training about speech and language difficulties from this website.

If expected progress has not been made a referral can then be made for speech and language therapy advice by using the 'Observation Matrix' and 'Background Information From Parents' form.
