Here is a list of just some of the publishers and the products that are available to support schools/parents and professionals.

There are many downloadable activities and some great online games. Many of the DVD’s/books/packs can also be ordered for Free.

Michael Palin Centre for Stammering Children: “ Wait, wait, I’m not finished yet” A Free new DVD to support schools in helping pupils who stammer. It has been designed for use in awareness-raising sessions run by SLTs or SENCOs, the DVD is appropriate to anyone working in a secondary school setting.

Various printable resources can also be found on the DVD.

Young person’s Identity Card - An identity card for children who find it difficult to communicate. This card is designed to help children identify themselves and get help if needed.  Free, contact Afasic.org

Information Pack -: “Tips for a Communication Friendly Environment” For employers and agencies for young people.

WriteOnline - a writing tool for school and home computers. This computer package helps a child construct meaningful sentences in a Word Document.

It uses Word prediction and suggests words to fit the context of the writing, it also has and a clear read-back voice that enables students to review what they have written. Research shows that this active engagement with text encourages students to find and correct errors for themselves. Writeonline can help increase a child’s confidence in writing as they compose flowing text with good vocabulary, accurate spelling and grammatically correct sentences.

This programme is has the advantage that it is ‘Online’ and therefore there's no installation, and no update patches to worry about. Once a license has been obtained the package can be accessed from any location, school or home. For more information contact:

Special Educational Needs (SEN) - A guide for parents and carers DCSF-00376-2008. Free Booklet via schools.

This parent’s guide sets out the main points of the Code of Practice, explains procedures and informs parents of their rights and of their child's rights.

“It’s Signing Time” - DVD and Leaflet. A resource of songs and rhymes incorporating Makaton Signs and is aimed primarily at parents and carers.

“SPEAK” - A Stammering resource pack for young people made by other young people who stammer. It explores some useful ideas and strategies- produced by Swindon NHS Tel: 01793 439960 to request.

Co: Writer Programme - A Word Processing Computer Package. This is a very popular predictive text programme and is ideal for children with language and/or literacy (spelling, writing, typing) difficulties. This programme works well on Mac and Windows PCs and it is a firm favourite with many children who use this programme on their laptops/computers in school.

Speech Link for Schools - Speech Link is available for purchase from Speechlink Multimedia.  It is a multi-media package that gives teachers and teaching assistants the ability to screen for developmental speech difficulties and implement speech sound programmes. It enables schools to be able to manage straightforward speech delays and to prioritise children who need referral for more specialist support.

Speech Link is not a substitute for existing speech and language therapy services. It is designed to work alongside them, helping schools and Speech and Language Therapists to work in partnership to make the best use of the service available. www.speechlink.info/sl_information.asp

Language Link for schools - The Language Link is available for purchase from Speechlink Multimedia. This package helps teachers and teaching assistants to screen for receptive language difficulties at school entry and implement support for children with straightforward language delays.

The package offers a receptive language screening assessment with supporting resources and classroom strategies. Language Link is not intended as a substitute for existing speech and language therapy services or language work in the classroom. It is designed to work alongside them to provide targeted help for children with difficulty understanding language.

Early Talk for pre-schools - The speech and language charity I CAN has recently established a UK online Early Talk programme specifically developed for nurseries and pre school settings. Its aim is to promote communication-supportive environments for all children and to ensure effective pre-school provision for children with communication needs. I CAN Early Talk supports the themes in early years policies throughout the UK by offering a programme of advisory support, information and professional development delivered in partnership with children’s services. Primary Talk for schools - Primary Talk is a staff development and a school transformation package. It is designed to fulfil staff’s professional development requirements to enable them to meet the communication needs of all children.

This package has been set up by the I CAN Charity and offers a programme of advisory support, information and professional development.

Secondary Talk for schools - Secondary Talk is a programme that ensure support for speech, language and communication needs of young people in secondary schools. This is a support package for staff and offers advisory support, information and professional development opportunities. It has been developed by the leading UK speech and Language Charity ICAN.
